What is Jiu Jitsu?
The champion of Japanese Jiu-Jitsu, Mitsuyo Esai Maeda, moved to Brazil in 1914 to aid in the establishment of a Japanese community. Gastao Gracie assisted him. Maeda taught Japanese Jiu-Jitsu to Carlos, the son of Gastao, as a token of his appreciation. Carlos’s four brothers learned Maeda’s methods from him. They established Brazil’s first Gracie Jiu-Jitsu academy in 1925.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), also referred to as “gentle art,” is a kind of martial art that enables a smaller, weaker individual to effectively defend themselves against a larger, stronger assailant. In order to overcome their opponent, Jiu-Jitsu practitioners emphasize taking the battle to the ground and using joint locks or chokeholds.
Helio, one of the brothers, weighed 135 pounds and was not well. Helio was short in stature, so he was particularly conscious of technique. He started to practice and modify the fundamental ideas of Jiu-Jitsu by adding leverage to the practice. This allowed a lesser opponent to overcome a bigger one. He started playing around, improving, and changing the fundamental methods.
